Discounts

You should define a discount if you want to define a system-wide discount for a product, membership, or a specific customer according to rate structure, date range, or quantity. The discount can only be applied to an order that meets the requirements you define on the Discount Maintenance screen. As of 7.5.0 if a product discount has been defined based on quantity, the quantity discount breakdown will display on the product detail page on the web, as highlighted below. Currently, quantity discounts are limited to the inventoried products subsystem only. For more information, please see Creating a Quantity-based Discount for Inventoried Products.

When calculating discounts, the system uses the round-to-even rule. For more information, please see Round-to-Even.

Coupons

You should define a coupon if you want to assign a discount to a specific customer through the purchase of a product. A coupon is typically a one-time item applied to an order and can also incorporate discounts within the item. You can define the variables of a coupon using the Coupon Maintenance screen.

One difference between coupons and discounts is that whereas discounts can be deferred and then recognized at a later time, coupons go immediately into revenue.

Once you apply a discount or a coupon to an order, you cannot modify the discount or coupon from the Discount Maintenance screen or the Coupon Maintenance screen. This prevents balances from being created on orders that were already paid in full.

It is recommended that you test your discounts and coupons to verify they function as required.
